Beekley Book Club – The Spectator Bird

Meet Joe Allston, a sharp-tongued, retired literary agent who describes himself as “just killing time until time gets around to killing me.” With no living family and a career spent managing the creativity of others, Joe has lived much of his life on the sidelines—until a postcard from a long-lost friend stirs memories he can no longer ignore.

In The Spectator Bird by Wallace Stegner, a journey to Denmark in search of his roots forces Joe to confront the ghosts of his past and the complexities of a life he’s tried hard to forget. Told through the lens of memory, this poignant novel explores identity, regret, and what it means to truly participate in one’s own life.
