About Barden Farm Market

Barden Farm and Barden Farm Market, both located in New Hartford, CT, is a fourth generation family owned and operated farm.

Established as a dairy farm in 1927, work horses were used to deliver milk to neighbors who had purchased a local milk route in the early years, in addition to selling milk to an agricultural co-op.

Until 1966, the farm was run as a dairy farm and from 1966 to 1999, Barden Farm primarily raised beef cattle. The farm also produced and sold hay, and grew vegetables as well.

Ed Barden decided to open the farm to the public in 1999. During the summer, he converted his garage into a self-service vegetable stand and began offering fall activities such as hayrides and pick-your-own pumpkins. After the popularity of the vegetable stand began to fill the entire garage space, Ed and Anita built a new vegetable stand and commercial kitchen in 2001. This enabled the product line to be expanded to include Anita’s famous cut flowers, jams, relishes, baked goods, and more.

Cara returned to the farm in 2010 after studying agriculture at SUNY Cobleskill, and the farm opened up for New Hartford’s first CSA program as another way to distribute produce to the community. As the demand for Barden Farm products grew in the spring of 2019, a downtown New Hartford, CT location opened, giving the community year-round access to Barden Farm products.

During the spring, summer, and fall seasons, Barden Farm & the Barden Farm Market continue to welcome visitors and shoppers!
